What is Green Steel?

Green steel is the production of steel without the use of fossil fuels. Green hydrogen is one solution that could help reduce the steel industry's carbon footprint. In theory, green steel can be produced in any way that reduces its carbon footprint; in practice, there are a few standard applications. The hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore is the most promising green steel manufacturing process. This involves chemically reducing the solid iron ore with hydrogen to produce ‘sponge iron,' an intermediate product. The sponge iron is then fed into an electric arc furnace and melted to make steel. Green steel has the potential to disrupt the steel industry and drive a transformational shift. It significantly reduces emissions and can use renewable energy on a continuous basis. Furthermore, green steel has no effect on the quality of end products. It is the most commonly used metal in the world today, and it can be found in many aspects of our daily lives, including automob...
